History and character of the Opera Square Festival

An open-air event
in a class of its own since 1978

**Originally created as a sign of gratitude from the then Lord Mayor Dr Walter Wallmann to the residents of the Opernplatz, the festival has developed into one of the city's most outstanding events.**

The lord mayor's thanks went to the patient people who endured the years of inconvenience caused by the construction work surrounding the rebuilding of the Alte Oper. From the modest Lucae Fountain Festival, which celebrated the completion of the fountain of the same name, it grew into a large-scale urban spectacle known as the Opera Square Festival.

Over the years, the Opera Square Festival has developed into an event that reflects the unique combination of tradition and modernity characterising Frankfurt. It is the only event of its kind on the Opernplatz, which makes it an exclusive highlight of the events calendar. The combination of historical significance and contemporary staging with dancing, music and culinary delights attracts thousands of visitors every year. The festival celebrates the cultural diversity and quality awareness of the city and symbolises Frankfurt's openness and joie de vivre.

The Opera Square Festival not only brings together people from different cultures and generations, it also serves as a living monument to the city's history and sense of community. It is a tribute to Frankfurt's resilience and cultural richness.

- **Music programme:**
The Opera Square Festival impresses with a varied music programme ranging from classical music to modern live acts and Italian folk music. Visitors may dance into the summer night against the breathtaking backdrop of the Alte Oper, move to cool beats or be enchanted by high-calibre live performances.
- **Culinary diversity:**
Local restaurateurs and chefs from fine restaurants around Opernplatz enhance the culinary experience with a variety of food stalls offering cuisine from all over the world. Whether it's German bratwurst, tarte flambée, Argentinian steak or Spanish paella, the quality and internationality of the food guarantee an incomparable taste experience. Together with the range of high-quality cocktails and other drinks prepared by experienced bartenders, the Opera Square Festival is a feast for the senses.
- **Atmosphere:**
The special atmosphere on Opernplatz, especially at dusk when the lighting bathes the square in a magical light, creates a unique mood. This is the place to end the day after work with colleagues and friends.
