description: "Anyone strolling through the Westend—a neighbourhood with numerous Wilhelminian-style villas—will sooner or later pass by the Westend Synagogue, an impressive domed building and one of Frankfurt’s landmarks. When the synagogue was built on Freiherr-vom-Stein-Straße from 1908 to 1910, it was the first within the historic city walls and was designed as a Reform synagogue. To this day, it remains Frankfurt’s largest synagogue and one of the few in Germany to have survived World War II. During the November pogroms of 1938, SA members set fire to its interior, and a bombing raid in 1944 also severely damaged it, but it was never completely destroyed. After the war, it was rebuilt."
