Opera in four acts by Aribert Reimann
In German with German surtitles
The legacy of the avant-garde composer Aribert Reimann (1936-2024) lives on at the Frankfurt Opera. His opera Melusine, which premiered in 1971, reveals an outwardly fairytale-like plot, but this cannot hide the fact that weighty political conflicts are simmering beneath its surface. The libretto by Claus H. Henneberg portrays the title character as a young, married woman who feels constricted by her indifferent bourgeois surroundings. Melusine finds an alternative world in an overgrown park where Pythia rules as "Queen of the Willows". Despite resolute resistance, Melusine is unable to prevent the planned construction of a castle on the park grounds and falls in love when the castle opens
