Art Supermarket
Art makes people happy—and that’s more than just a slogan. The benefits of art have now been well documented: A 2019 report by the WHO Regional Office for Europe analyzed over 3,000 studies and found positive effects on well-being and mental health. In Montreal and Brussels, doctors were even able to prescribe museum visits to their patients. Nevertheless, most homes don’t have a single original piece of art hanging on the walls, often out of concern that art is too expensive or that one doesn’t understand it. This is exactly where the Art Supermarket comes in: Fixed prices starting at 69 euros take the fear of taking the plunge away, and anyone browsing doesn’t need any prior knowledge—just an eye for what they like. “Art makes people happy—we’ve been convinced of that for a long time. We see it every day in the store: People walk in by chance, stop in front of a painting, and go home with their first original. That’s exactly why we do this,” says Julia Loytved, managing director of the Kunstsupermarkt. The concept has remained the same since 2000: four fixed price tiers that anyone can understand at a glance. The selection is complemented by large-format works sold at fair individual prices. The variety is intentionally broad: The selection ranges from figurative works to abstract paintings, from small-format pieces for a shelf to large canvases for the living room, office, or medical practice. New works are added regularly, making a second visit well worth it—perhaps while searching for a Christmas gift that’s guaranteed to be one-of-a-kind.
