Out of Storage - Focus on the Friends' acquisitions

Exhibition Event
Since its foundation 40 years ago, the Friends of the Deutsches Architekturmuseum have supported the expansion of the museum's collection - by arranging, purchasing and donating plans, drawings, photographs, models and books. On the occasion of its anniversary, the exhibition "Out of Storage" brings together for the first time all the archive materials that have been added to the collection with the help of the Friends. Over 130 exhibits from various decades of the 20th and 21st centuries are on display - including works by internationally renowned architects such as Archigram, Future Systems, Bruce Goff, Hans Poelzig and Hans Scharoun.

At the same time, the show invites visitors to reflect on collecting architecture: on the role of archives, on questions of access and preservation - and on the significance of architecture museums today as places of knowledge and mediation.

The title "Out of Storage" is ambiguous: on the one hand, it is to be understood as an appeal to make the collection holdings supported by the Freundeskreis publicly visible - on the other hand, it refers to the logistical challenges of growing archives, in which the majority of the holdings remain hidden and can only rarely be exhibited.

The presentation is complemented by the voices of international curators and collection directors - for example from the Museum of Modern Art or the Korean Museum of Urbanism and Architecture, which is currently in the planning stage. In interviews, they reflect on the potential of the archive not only as a repository, but also as a source of inspiration for new knowledge - and as a productive, inspiring force within the architectural discipline.
