Café Heimelig
The cakes here not only taste like they were made by grandma, they are actually baked by senior citizens.
The Danes call it "hygge", but you can also simply say: homely. And at this Bockenheimer Eck café, the name clearly says it all. In front of pretty blue and white tiles on the wall are antique chairs and wooden tables that owner Tina Brückmann has found in attics, antique stores and online. To complete the living room feel, photos from times gone by adorn the walls, a historic sewing machine serves as a sideboard and bouquets of dried flowers are placed in old porcelain teapots.
The café team lovingly prepares the breakfast options, which are also served outside in good weather. There is sourdough bread with homemade spreads, scrambled eggs or cheese, nicely garnished with radishes, cress or herbs. For many guests, however, the café's delicious cakes are a reason to come back again and again. Bee sting, blackcurrant meringue, Danube wave, cheesecake or crumble cake are baked by a team of people from all generations. Tina Brückmann also employs senior citizens who bake cakes and tarts according to old recipes that literally taste "like grandma's". It's a win-win situation, as the bakers can not only supplement their pensions with this part-time job, but also make friends and socialize.
