Depot 1899

It was a sensation: In 1883, Germany’s first electric tram rattled through Frankfurt at a speed of 12 kilometres per hour. It was considered a futuristic replacement for the horse-drawn tram. Today, what is arguably the most beautiful depot of the “Elektrische” is a designated historic landmark and houses Depot 1899: a modern restaurant in Sachsenhausen that has retained its industrial charm. Instead of the smell of lubricating oil, the air is filled with the aroma of Frankfurt potato soup, grilled wild game bratwurst, or schnitzel with homemade Grie sauce. Locals and visitors alike feast under a brick vaulted ceiling or outside on the large terrace. To complement the regional classics, the restaurant serves its own Depot beer on tap. And after a few glasses? You can simply hop on the tram for the ride home.
