Bockenheimer Warte

  • Historical Building
The Bockenheimer Warte brings medieval city history to life in a vibrant square between Westend and Bockenheim.

The Bockenheimer Warte stands at the western end of Bockenheimer Landstraße and is one of the surviving watchtowers of Frankfurt’s former Landwehr. The stone tower was built in the 15th century and once marked an important crossing point on the old trade route heading west.
Today, the watchtower stands in the middle of a lively urban space. Around the tower, streets, transit stops, open spaces, restaurants, and the hustle and bustle of everyday life converge. It is precisely this contrast that brings the place to life: Amid traffic, cafés, and urban life, the Gothic tower serves as a reminder of a time when Frankfurt was still secured by a militia, moats, and guarded entrances.
The tower itself is not open to the public, but it clearly defines the square. With its compact form, stone masonry, and pointed roof, the Bockenheimer Warte is a striking historical landmark in western Frankfurt.
