Ebersbach Monastery
They had set themselves the goal of living according to the rule ora et labora "from the work of their hands, agriculture and animal husbandry". The strict monastic life and the disciplined management of the estates, but above all the successes in winegrowing and winemaking, soon turned the abbey into a flourishing business.
Although it had served as a correction house and a state asylum after secularization in 1803, the current appearance of the monastery is still shaped by the centuries-old wine-growing tradition and is affiliated to the Hessian State Wine Estates. Since 1998, wine tastings, guided tours, concerts and other cultural events have been held there under the auspices of the Eberbach Monastery Foundation. A particular highlight are the wine auctions held several times a year in the former layman's dormitory, the longest non-sacred room in Germany built in the Middle Ages at 83 m².
Also worth seeing at Eberbach Monastery are the monastery church, a mighty Romanesque basilica consecrated in 1186, artistically designed tombs and the monks' dormitory, a two-aisled, early Gothic room with a 72-metre-long ribbed vault.
The monastery garden invites visitors to take a stroll and linger, while the monastery tavern is a great place to eat. You can stay overnight in the Eberbach Monastery Guest House.
