Frankfurt is proud of its royal and imperial past: after all, the rulers of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation were once elected there. The Kaisersaal in the “Römer”—the magnificent city hall—is a particularly impressive reminder of this: Starting in 1612, the coronations of new emperors were celebrated with banquets in this stately setting. Today, visitors can admire portraits of 52 former kings and emperors there. Amid the abundance of wood and gold hang portraits ranging from Charlemagne to Frederick Barbarossa to Francis II. Tours of the Kaisersaal are available when it is not in use. Incidentally, this stately hall is used not only to receive prominent guests but also to welcome new residents of Frankfurt on a regular basis.
