Enkheimer Ried

  • Protected Areas
Located on the eastern outskirts of Frankfurt, the Enkheimer Ried features a tranquil marshland landscape with a pond, reeds, and willow thickets.

The Enkheimer Ried is located on the eastern edge of Frankfurt in the Bergen-Enkheim district. The nature reserve originated from a former oxbow lake of the Main River and was long used for peat extraction and as a source of natural ice.
Today, the area is characterized by a large pond, reed beds, and willow thickets. The shoreline areas provide habitat for waterfowl such as great crested grebes, cormorants, gadwalls, and other duck species. A small population of European pond turtles is also known to live here.
The Enkheimer Ried stands in contrast to the densely built-up parts of the city. Trails and peripheral areas offer glimpses into the wetland landscape without compromising its protected status. Characteristic features include open bodies of water, dense reed beds, and transitions to the surrounding green spaces. The area is characterized above all by its peaceful, natural atmosphere and its significance as a protected area.
