Steinheim Castle Museum

History Museum

Steinheim Castle is a worthwhile destination for anyone who wants to experience culture, history and a special place on the River Main. The historic castle offers exciting insights into the region's past and can be ideally combined with a visit to Steinheim's old town.

Steinheim Castle is located in the heart of Steinheim’s historic district, with its cozy restaurants and cider taverns. First mentioned in 1222, it was owned by the Electorate of Mainz for about 370 years. Between 1808 and 1813, renovations in the Neoclassical style were carried out, shaping the building’s current appearance. The building has been used as a museum since 1938.
In 1986, the current Steinheim Castle Museum of Regional Archaeology and Steinheim City History opened. The museum explores the earliest human traces in the Hanau region, artifacts from the Stone and Bronze Ages, and the legacy of the Romans through to relics of the early Middle Ages. Other rooms in the museum are dedicated to the eventful history of the once-imposing castle complex as well as the history of the town of Steinheim. A centerpiece of the exhibition is the town model depicting Steinheim around 1560.
Regional archaeology and the history of Steinheim can be experienced not only in the exhibition itself, but also through various activities in and around Steinheim Castle that allow visitors to immerse themselves in times past.
Why not try your hand at Roman cooking for a change, or explore Steinheim Castle in the dark with a flashlight?
