Opera in three acts by Agostino Steffani
In Italian with German and English surtitles
Musical direction: Václav Luks; staging: R.B. Schlather

The musical experience is characterized by contrasting arias, recitatives and duets with an extraordinary instrumental and vocal colourfulness. Steffani's music had a great influence on his contemporaries and the next generation of composers, including Georg Philipp Telemann and Georg Friedrich Händel.
Steffani was one of the most famous composers of his time. He left behind a total of 17 operas that combine Italian, German and French stylistic elements - all of which he absorbed on his travels through Europe. Steffani and his librettist Ortensio Mauro based their opera on an episode from Virgil's Aeneid: Aeneas and Turnus fight over the beautiful Lavinia. She is supposed to save her father Latinus by promising to marry Turnus. But Cupid has long since implanted the dream image of Aeneas in Lavinia's heart. After a number of trials and tribulations, which the composer makes sometimes richly ornate, sometimes extremely lyrical but also comedic, Lavinia and Aeneas find each other.
