In 1356, the "Golden Bull" enshrines an older tradition in law: Frankfurt became the place of election of the Roman kings and future emperors of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. Later, from 1562, coronations also took place in Frankfurt. St. Bartholomew's Cathedral was the focal point of these events, which put the whole city in a state of emergency and attracted countless visitors.
