Zum Lemp
This inn on the north-eastern outskirts of Frankfurt is a cider pub, beer garden, theatre and contemporary witness all rolled into one.
The "Zum Lemp" inn is the ultimate jack-of-all-trades. It is the only restaurant in the Berkersheim district on the north-eastern outskirts of Frankfurt, making it the main meeting place for neighbours, clubs, families, etc. – and also the local theatre. From September to April, the small "Lempenfieber" ensemble performs in the inn's hall; the programme mainly includes cabaret and boulevard plays. In addition to the hall, there is a cosy dining room, a vaulted cellar and a garden where you can sit at beer tables under a massive chestnut tree.
The menu includes hearty dishes and, of course, cider from a local winery. The owners, Kirsten and Sasha Josephowitz, like to tell anecdotes from the long history of the establishment: built in 1778 as the home of a farming family called Lemp, the first inn licence for the "Lemp" was granted in 1852; later, the innkeepers also sold stamps and ration cards here and had the only public telephone in the village.
