Christian Schad Museum
More than almost any other artist, Christian Schad (1894 - 1982) stands for the "New Objectivity" style of the 1920s. In 1942, Schad came to Aschaffenburg for a private commission, followed by a lucrative public one: to create a copy of Matthias Grünewald's Madonna painting. When his Berlin studio was destroyed in the bombing, his second wife Bettina rescued his artworks and brought them to Aschaffenburg, where they remained for the rest of her life. After Schad's death, Bettina Schad founded the "Christian Schad Foundation Aschaffenburg".
From the estate of Christian Schad, which comprises more than 3,200 works, around 220 works of painting, drawing, prints, collages and Schadographs by the artist, including the famous "Mexican Woman", are on display in the Christian Schad Museum, which will open in 2022.
