The Bauhaus movement is well known throughout Germany. But in the 1920s, “Das Neue Frankfurt” also emerged—a similar social reform project that revolutionized urban planning in the metropolis on the Main. A prime example of this is the former Main Customs Office. A visit there is worthwhile not only for architecture enthusiasts; since 2007, the building has served as a branch of the renowned Museum of Modern Art, located directly across the street.
While the main building displays parts of the impressive collection and larger temporary exhibitions, the MMK at the Customs Office is more intimate and experimental. It often features projects and collaborations by young, relatively unknown artists—an exciting contrast to the austere, functionalist building.
