Frauenfriedenskirche

Church
This church behind the Palmengarten shows the architecture of the New Frankfurt at its best: clear lines and lots of light and color.
Architect Hans Herkommer (1887-1956) saw "line, light and color" as the defining elements of this church, which he designed from 1927 to the northwest of Frankfurt's city center, just behind the Palmengarten. Right down to the smallest detail: from the three large, cuboid structures to the ventilation grilles, the rainwater collection boxes on the roof and the carpet rail in the courtyard, everything is kept in the clear, simple style of New Frankfurt. This makes the main figure to whom this church is dedicated all the more luminous: the Regina Pacis, the Queen of Peace, stands 12 meters tall above the main portal. Incidentally, it was designed - using a concrete core and mosaics – by one of the country's design celebrities: Emil Sutor (1888-1974), who also designed the German television award "Bambi".
Further highlights await inside: In addition to the mosaics on the altar wall, the graphically designed windows are particularly striking; Joachim Pick (1931-2012) designed them in 1961 as the torn curtain of Golgotha. The original windows were destroyed in bombing raids in 1944. A must-see is also hidden in the crypt: the Pietà by the deaf sculptor Ruth Schaumann (1899-1975). The sadness on her face is also a hope for what the Regina Pacis is supposed to bring about: Peace.
