Anyone looking for a castle in Günthersburgpark will search in vain. The small moated castle, complete with a moat and drawbridge, which was built in the 17th century, no longer exists, as the Rothschild family replaced it with a summer palace in 1855. However, only the orangery remains from that structure; it was severely damaged during World War II but was later rebuilt.
None of this detracts from the charm of this 7.4-hectare oasis in the Nordend neighbourhood, however: Today, the public park—with its expansive meadows, old trees, water features, sculptures, and adventure playground—is one of the city’s most popular green spaces. The STOFFEL Open Air festival in the summer is particularly lively—featuring concerts, a night flea market, children’s activities, and cabaret. Who needs a castle when you have this?
