Sachsenhausen Lookout

  • Historical Building
The Sachsenhäuser Warte, a stone watchtower, serves as a reminder of how Frankfurt’s southern city limits were once secured.

The Sachsenhäuser Warte is located in the south of Frankfurt, on the outskirts of Sachsenhausen. The historic watchtower was part of Frankfurt’s Landwehr, which the city used in the Middle Ages to secure its outer borders and important access routes. The road leading to Frankfurt from the south passed through this spot.
The current structure dates back to the 15th century. With its round tower, stone masonry, and enclosed courtyard, the Sachsenhäuser Warte still resembles a small defensive structure today. It serves as a reminder that Frankfurt was once protected not only by walls but also by outlying watchtowers, ditches, and hedges. Today, the watchtower stands in a busy area on the southern outskirts of Sachsenhausen.
