Good things sometimes happen by chance—Schwedlersee is a case in point. Originally, an expansion of the East Harbour was planned here in the early 20th century. The ground was excavated, but the connection to the North Basin was never completed. Eventually, the pit filled with groundwater, creating a local recreational area named after the civil engineer Johann Wilhelm Schwedler.
