Martin Lejeune presents his long-standing engagement with the outstanding trombonist Albert Mangelsdorff himself: "As part of the commemoration of the first anniversary of Albert Mangelsdorff's death in 2006, I already had the honor of establishing a musical formation on behalf of the Frankfurt Jazz Initiative and selecting and rearranging pieces for it. Both then and now, the aim is to regularly recall Albert Mangelsdorff's music and life's work to the collective memory, to recognize what is special about it and to pass on the message of freedom, peace, democracy and international understanding (...) The search for the individual artistic voice has made Albert Mangelsdorff one of the best-known German jazz musicians. My research aims to explore this voice:

  • What musical and social factors shaped the personality of this innovative musician as well as this equally modest man?
  • What is the European factor of jazz and what influence did Albert Mangelsdorff have on it?"

Martin Lejeune was particularly fascinated by the solo trombone recordings and asks further:

  • "Are speaking voice and musical instrument really inseparable?
  • How can I reassemble Mangelsdorff fragments and what inspiration does this provide for my own music? What new compositional and/or improvisational approaches arise?
  • What role do his field recordings of birdsong play, apart from the well-known tit in front of the window?"

The newly formed band will seek and present their answers to these exciting questions - on the very best stage for this, the Palmengarten, where Albert has set the musical standard for many years and has fascinated and inspired Frankfurt's jazz audience.
