The best thing to do is to start by ordering a glass of apple wine and taking in the surroundings of the tavern: After all, the Hühnermarkt, located between the Imperial Cathedral and the Römerberg, is one of the oldest inhabited squares in the city. Chickens were traded here as far back as the Middle Ages. Centuries later, Goethe would have strolled along here as well, since his aunt lived on this square—in the Haus zum Esslinger, which today houses the Struwwelpeter Museum. The square was destroyed during World War II. It wasn’t until the Dom-Römer Project, carried out between 2014 and 2018, that it was reconstructed.
The tavern has been located here since 2018. “Frankfurt cuisine the way it’s supposed to taste” is served here, as the hosts proudly note. The menu features both seasonal dishes and classics: green sauce, Handkäs, spare ribs, and Hessian sausage specialties.
