Abbey Museum - Abbey Basilica of St Peter and Alexander

History Museum
Special Museum
Today's collegiate basilica on the Stiftsberg was built in the 10th century as the centre of the St Peter & Alexander Abbey and has undergone many changes over the course of time due to destruction. Until 1803, it was a symbol of the spiritual power of the archbishops and electors of Mainz.
The foundation of St. Peter and Alexander Abbey around 950 can be traced back to members of the family of Emperor Otto the Great (912-973). After the death of Duke Otto of Swabia and Bavaria, the church and its considerable property fell to the diocese of Mainz in 982.
The Abbey Museum houses many exhibits from the founding period of Aschaffenburg and valuable treasures from the abbey's time. The permanent exhibition "Splendour and Faith of the Middle Ages" shows the precious abbey treasury and is a true medieval treasure trove, which impresses with objects made of silver, rock crystal and gold as well as valuable book illuminations. The famous "Magdalene Altarpiece" from the workshop of Lucas Cranach the Elder takes centre stage.
Among the most impressive pieces in the collegiate basilica are the so-called "Stuppacher Madonna" and the "Lamentation of Christ" by Matthias Grünewald.
