Dommuseum

Originally, the plan was simply to excavate a mundane heating shaft beneath the Imperial Cathedral—but instead, an early medieval grave was uncovered in 1991: Two little girls had been buried there in the early 8th century, along with delicate gold jewelry, amulets, and toys. Today, their grave goods are among the highlights of the Cathedral Museum. It is located in the cathedral’s magnificent cloister but was expanded in 2006 to include the “Sakristeum” in the neighboring Haus am Dom. Precious sacred vessels, chasubles, and liturgical goldwork from the three former Frankfurt collegiate churches offer a glimpse into just how wealthy St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral—as well as St. Leonard’s and the Church of Our Lady—once were. In addition, there are fascinating special exhibitions. Those who want to learn as much as possible are advised to take a public guided tour of the cathedral and the museum.
