Golden Apple

Are you really still standing in present-day Frankfurt—or in the middle of 19th-century Judengasse? In the vaulted cellar of the “Goldener Apfel”, reality becomes blurred, thanks to an immersive multimedia exhibition by the Jewish Museum. It tells the story of how Frankfurt’s Jewish community fought for equal rights in society after the ghetto restrictions were lifted. Built in 1809, the house stood on Staufenmauer and at the northern end of Judengasse. The combination of an authentic setting and state-of-the-art technology creates a unique experience. Particularly exciting is the immersive media installation “REALTALK 1864”: Visitors find themselves face-to-face with various life-size avatars, such as the messenger boy Josef Löwy. Thanks to AI, they can actually talk to these characters, let them guide them through the digital Judengasse—and learn about the challenges people faced around 160 years ago.
