Kaiserpfalz franconofurd

Beneath the ultra-modern town hall on the market square, a path leads down into the past—right into the heart of the Imperial Palace of Franconofurd. That is the name of the exhibition featuring Frankfurt’s oldest surviving ruins. Whether the remains of Roman baths, the walls of the Carolingian royal court, or late-medieval cellars: all these traces of the city’s history were unearthed as early as the 1970s during subway construction. Afterward, they lay exposed in an open-air archaeological garden—and were at risk of weathering away. The town hall, built specifically over them, now protects them like a roof. Admission to the modern exhibition space is free. It is also regularly used for readings, concerts, and other events, especially during the Franconofurd Summer from June through August.
