How differently do we, as human beings, see or hear our surroundings depending on our culture? What do we believe in? What happens to a culture when people migrate, and what traces have colonial power structures left behind? The Weltkulturen Museum explores these fundamental questions in its exhibitions and often answers them by examining specific regions, craft techniques, or artistic movements. It has a wealth of material to draw upon: 65,000 artifacts from Oceania, Africa, Southeast Asia, and North, Central, and South America are part of the collection of this institution, which was founded as early as 1904; this also includes some 120,000 historical and contemporary photographs and films, as well as 64,000 library volumes. The Weltkulturen Museum curates an ever-changing selection of items from its collection for rotating special exhibitions; there is no permanent exhibition. A wonderful opportunity for anyone who wants to delve deeper or get hands-on: In addition to guided tours and discussions on the respective exhibition theme, there are also workshops on varying topics and creative techniques.
