Schauspiel Frankfurt

The Schauspiel Frankfurt is not only one of the city’s most important theatres, but also ranks among the major venues in the German theatre scene. Its stages—there are four venues in total: the Schauspielhaus on Willy-Brandt-Platz, the Kammerspiele, the Box, and the off-site Bockenheimer Depot—feature both classics and contemporary plays. After all, the Schauspiel sees itself as an institution that sheds light on social issues, presents diverse perspectives, and addresses current topics. The popular—and therefore quickly sold-out—guided tours of the Schauspielhaus also offer a completely different perspective: they take visitors behind the scenes to the machinery beneath the stage or into the workshops. On these tours, you’ll also learn more about the history of the institution—which dates back to the 18th century and developed into a centre of Expressionist theatre in Germany in the 1920s—as well as about the architecture of the building, which was inaugurated in 1963.
