Goethestraße

  • Shopping Street
Would Goethe have gone shopping on this luxury shopping street? It’s not out of the question—after all, the Privy Councillor certainly valued elegance.
If only the dear Privy Councillor knew—that a Frankfurt street named after him is, of all things, a luxury shopping district! It runs between Opernplatz and Goetheplatz, parallel to Große Bockenheimer Straße—also known as “Freßgass”—and features brands like Prada, Burberry, Versace, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Patek Philippe, and many more. Just to give you an idea of the caliber of shopping you’ll find here as you stroll through the boutiques. The question is: Would Goethe have appreciated that this street is all about consumerism and fine fabrics? Perhaps he would have! If you look at some of his portraits—such as Tischbein’s “Goethe in the Campagna”—it’s quite reasonable to assume that he, too, cared about his appearance.
